Widemouth Bay

Widemouth Bay is one of North Cornwall’s best-known sandy beaches, just a short drive, approx 9 miles from Hentervene and close to Bude.

With a wide stretch of sand backed by dunes and cliffs, it is a great all-round beach for families, surfing, swimming and beach days.

What makes Widemouth Bay special?

Wide sandy beach

There is plenty of space to spread out, particularly at low tide, making Widemouth a popular choice for a traditional day at the beach.

Surfing

Widemouth is a popular surfing beach, with surf schools operating during the main season. Conditions can vary, so always check the sea before entering.

Coastal walks

The South West Coast Path runs along the coastline, with excellent views across Widemouth Bay and the surrounding cliffs.

Family friendly

The large sandy beach makes Widemouth a popular choice for families, with plenty of room for games, sandcastles and exploring.

Dog Friendly

Dogs are banned from the beach between May 15th and September 30th, between the hours of 10am and 6pm. Dogs are welcome at all other times.

Facilities

There is a large car park close to the beach, along with toilets, cafés and places to eat and drink.

Beach safety

Widemouth is an exposed Atlantic beach and conditions can change quickly. Take care around the sea and cliffs, check the tide and follow any lifeguard instructions.

Widemouth Bay is an RNLI lifeguarded beach, and is patrolled from the 4th of May to the 29th of September between 10am and 6pm. The beach is additionally patrolled in the Easter school holidays and October half-term. As well as weekends between 20th April – 28th April and 5th October and 20th October. (2024)

Our tip: Visit at low tide when the beach is at its widest, or head down later in the day when it can become quieter.
